The play opens with the village of Valiyannur gearing up to stage Kaali Naatakam, after 51 years. This is a ritual where Goddess Kali triumphs over the demon king Darika. The ritual was stopped at Valiyannur temple after the actor playing Kali murdered the actor playing Darika.
Now the ritual is being brought back with much fanfare and piety. This time, Darika’s part is played by a local landlord named Rama Kurup, notorious for his lecherous activities. Kali is played by a woman activist named Kali, who was at the forefront of the public protest against Rama Kurup.
In a trance during the show, Kali murders Rama Kurup. But soon, the question arises whether Kali killed Rama Kurup or was it Goddess Kali restoring world order by murdering Darika. Religion challenges Police as Media plays up the sentiments.
Beyond the obvious realms of imagery, the play attempts to ponder the philosophical angle of gender justice. It treats Goddess Kali as a symbol of woman empowerment. It is believed that women are empowered just enough to perform some specific tasks. Goddess Kali is created as Darika cannot be murdered by a man. But Kali has to settle down as an idol after venting her anger.
But Kali in the play refuses to settle down. She keeps her anger simmering to keep fighting the injustices happening around. But the question is whether the society is ready to deal with such a Kali.
